Halvorsen History & Heritage
Halvorsen Boats traces its roots to 1887 when Halvor Andersen, a farmer, launched his first wooden craft near Arendal in the south of Norway. His son Lars followed in his father’s footsteps and became a boat builder.
Lars and his family, including sons Harold and Carl, settled in Sydney in 1925. From 1925 through to 1980 the family enterprise built over 1,500 craft making the Halvorsen name an Australian byword for quality and style.
After World War II the company acquired a lease at Bobbin Head located north of Sydney in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. The family built a fleet of approximately 200 hire boats. This made the Halvorsen boat hire operation the world’s largest privately owned fleet of its time.
The quality and integrity of the Halvorsen workmanship is legendary. The standard of finish and fittings was unsurpassed; glistening teak, maple and mahogany paneling, French-polished interiors, custom made metalwork were all a cut above the rest.
Kangaroo, a 36’ Standard Cruiser, was launched in November 1958 (job 1127) into the Halvorsen Hire Fleet at Bobbin Head. These elegant 36’ cruisers, first launched in July 1948, were the amalgamation of many previous design concepts and were the second in the range of standard cruisers offered by Halvorsens. The first 19 were designed for private buyers. Ten 36s were in the hire fleet with ‘Tooronga’ launched in April 1957 being the first. Others included ‘Enterprise’, ‘Peer Gynt’, ‘Miramar’ and ‘White Heather’.

October 2024 (day cruise)
Thank you Michele for the most idyllic and relaxing day. I felt like the Queen floating along on the beautiful Kangaroo. Very special.
October 2024 (4 days / 3 nights)
Our grand adventure started at Newport, where we then passed Scotland Island and cruised into Coaster Retreat to spend the night. In the morning, we left the bay and decided to cruise to America Bay to have breakfast. After that, we picked up my mum and my grandma and travelled to Hallets Beach around 10 o’clock. We saw a seal off the back of the boat! In the evening, we dropped off my grandma, and let my mum stay for the night. Together the next day, me and my mum went fishing together, but had no luck. In the afternoon we cruised back to Cottage Point, dropped off my mum and drove into America Bay. Our last night was filled with surprises, as we saw amazing creatures, like flying fish and an eagle. Our last day was filled to the brim with luck. I caught 8 fish in 45 minutes. Thank you for this terrific experience on board the Kangaroo!
October 2024 (day cruise)
What a delicious day on our Pittwater paradise – a real treat to be together and enjoy the magnificent Kangaroo. Thank you Michele.
Lovely trip out to Lovett with family to scatter our darling Don McFee’s ashes. He grew up on Pittwater in the 1930’s and rowed around as a young lad. He knew every bay and anchorage and also walked the bush untroubled. Camping out with a friend overnight in Kuring-gai on many occasions. A wonderful untroubled childhood led him to enjoy the bush and he later went outback to farm and when he retired travel to far away places and know and love the wild spaces.
