Halvorsen History & Heritage
Halvorsen Boats traces its roots to 1887 when Halvor Andersen, a farmer, launched his first wooden craft near Arendal in the south of Norway. His son Lars followed in his father’s footsteps and became a boat builder.
Lars and his family, including sons Harold and Carl, settled in Sydney in 1925. From 1925 through to 1980 the family enterprise built over 1,500 craft making the Halvorsen name an Australian byword for quality and style.
After World War II the company acquired a lease at Bobbin Head located north of Sydney in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. The family built a fleet of approximately 200 hire boats. This made the Halvorsen boat hire operation the world’s largest privately owned fleet of its time.
The quality and integrity of the Halvorsen workmanship is legendary. The standard of finish and fittings was unsurpassed; glistening teak, maple and mahogany paneling, French-polished interiors, custom made metalwork were all a cut above the rest.
Kangaroo, a 36’ Standard Cruiser, was launched in November 1958 (job 1127) into the Halvorsen Hire Fleet at Bobbin Head. These elegant 36’ cruisers, first launched in July 1948, were the amalgamation of many previous design concepts and were the second in the range of standard cruisers offered by Halvorsens. The first 19 were designed for private buyers. Ten 36s were in the hire fleet with ‘Tooronga’ launched in April 1957 being the first. Others included ‘Enterprise’, ‘Peer Gynt’, ‘Miramar’ and ‘White Heather’.

February 2025 (day cruise)
An Unforgettable Journey Back in Time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We recently had the privilege of booking a boat trip with Michele to celebrate our dad’s 70th birthday, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. From start to finish, Michele went above and beyond to ensure that every detail was perfect. Her professionalism, warmth, and genuine passion for what she does made the entire process seamless and truly special. Some of our most treasured childhood memories were spent on the water aboard our old Halvorsen, Lady H. Being able to take our dad back—back to the boat, back to our favorite place at Coasters Retreat where we spent countless weekends as a family—was an experience we will cherish forever. This trip was more than just a celebration; it was a beautiful tribute to the moments that shaped us. The boat itself is in immaculate condition, a testament to Michele’s dedication and care. Her attention to detail, thoughtfulness, and easy communication made planning effortless, allowing us to focus on what mattered most—reliving those precious memories with our dad. If you’re looking for an unforgettable boating experience with someone who truly cares, we cannot recommend Michele highly enough. She didn’t just provide a service; she helped us recreate a piece of our past, and for that, we are forever grateful. A big thank you to Ian also for his conversation and care on the day as well. Thank you, Michele, for making such a special day even more meaningful. We absolutely loved it!!.

Our 6th trip aboard Kangaroo - though it was a short one we loved it no less! Water was perfection and the sun shone when it was supposed to rain. A night and a day exploring Morning Bay/Towlers and lunch and a swim at the Basin. Delightful! Already looking forward to returning!
