Halvorsen History & Heritage

Halvorsen Boats traces its roots to 1887 when Halvor Andersen, a farmer, launched his first wooden craft near Arendal in the south of Norway. His son Lars followed in his father’s footsteps and became a boat builder.

Lars and his family, including sons Harold and Carl, settled in Sydney in 1925. From 1925 through to 1980 the family enterprise built over 1,500 craft making the Halvorsen name an Australian byword for quality and style.

After World War II the company acquired a lease at Bobbin Head located north of Sydney in the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. The family built a fleet of approximately 200 hire boats. This made the Halvorsen boat hire operation the world’s largest privately owned fleet of its time.

The quality and integrity of the Halvorsen workmanship is legendary. The standard of finish and fittings was unsurpassed; glistening teak, maple and mahogany paneling, French-polished interiors, custom made metalwork were all a cut above the rest.

Kangaroo, a 36’ Standard Cruiser, was launched in November 1958 (job 1127) into the Halvorsen Hire Fleet at Bobbin Head.  These elegant 36’ cruisers, first launched in July 1948, were the amalgamation of many previous design concepts and were the second in the range of standard cruisers offered by Halvorsens. The first 19 were designed for private buyers. Ten 36s were in the hire fleet with ‘Tooronga’ launched in April 1957 being the first. Others included ‘Enterprise’, ‘Peer Gynt’, ‘Miramar’ and ‘White Heather’.

September 2025 (5 days / 5 nights)

A great first night in the marina. Dinner at The Newport Hotel and a controversial Broncos prelim final victory. Spent Monday night in Smiths Creek's last inlet. Joe caught a 38 cm bream on prawns. Michele had recommended a visit to Cottage Rock, which had a beautiful waterfall and oysters! Lots of touring different bays. Beautiful weather!! Returned to Smiths Creek for Tuesday night. Travelled down Cowan Creek, enjoying gorgeous weather and conditions. Settled in Yeomans Bay for Wednesday night. Lots of fishing, swimming, UNO and mini basketball. Enjoyed touring Castle Lagoon in 'Joey'. Discovered another pretty waterfall. Lots of birdlife and jellyfish. On Thursday, moored in America Bay. 'Joeyed' to Refuge for some time on the beach and in the waterfall. Such beautiful weather for early Spring. Enjoyed a gorgeous sunset from the comfort of the back deck. The moment the sun dropped behind the mountains, WOOSHKA! Another big bream bit! We'll be on our way back to Pittwater tomorrow followed by 4 nights in Surrey Hills and then driving back to Brisbane. Thankyou Michele for an amazing experience aboard Kangaroo.

August 2025 (7 days / 7 nights)

Blissful week! Such a charming timber beauty! Michele is wonderful too - has put so many thoughtful touches on the boat for guests and offered so many thoughtful touches in her service as well. Couldn’t possibly have asked for more. She really goes above and beyond. And her pride & joy (this little beauty, the MV Kangaroo) is just gorgeous!

May 2025 (3 days / 2 nights)

I booked Kangaroo as a surprise birthday present for my partner, Phil, who has been painstakingly restoring his own 30’ Halvorsen for over 5 years, which we hope to have in the water this summer. I had hoped he would be inspired by what was to come for us and the present delivered in spades! We had the loveliest time out on Pittwater for two nights and 3 days - relaxing and enjoying the peace and tranquility that this waterway offers with Phil spending quite some time inspecting all the clever ideas Michele has applied to her boat noting a few to apply to ‘Birdie’. Kangaroo has so much charm and character, as only a timber boat has, and Michele’s many thoughtful additions like tea, coffee, olive oil and other items like the fairy lights! … just add to the whole delightful experience. We loved our time out there, Thank you so much Michele.

April 2025 (4 days / 3 nights)

Spectacular 4 days and 3 nights on the mighty Kangaroo. Highlights included catching fish at The Basin and Yeomans Bay, seeing turtles and eagles at Yeomans Bay, early morning calm waters whilst sipping coffee and eating pancakes, late afternoon Uno and sunsets. Toppng it all off, our daughter had to go back to shore for a football tournament. It was an early start and relay with friends on the mainland driving her back and forth. And the great news... they won the tournament and she was awarded 'Coaches Player'! Thanks for the great vibes Kangaroo.
